Getting Acclimated
in Colorado
Moving
to an area one mile above sea level may take some getting used to.
Prepare yourself for considerable changes. The following will give
you an idea of the some of the changes you can expect from living
in Colorado.
ALTITUDE
If you're a first-timer
to Colorado, you may experience a more rapid heartbeat, shortness
of breath, chapped lips and a quick sunburn. Compared with sea level,
you are more than a mile closer to the sun, so the air is thinner
and clearer. While there is less oxygen and less humidity, there is
also less distortion of sight and sound. The sun burns your skin faster
because ultraviolet rays are transmitted more directly through thin
mountain air. For that reason, sun glasses and sunscreen are recommended
year-round.
Most people enjoy a comfortable life at high elevations. The varying
Colorado elevation climbs as steadily as Interstate 70 winds westward.
The communities of Golden, Evergreen and Georgetown each become higher
until you reach the Eisenhower Tunnel, where the elevation reaches
over 11,000 feet. The highest spot in the area, 14,260 feet at the
summit of Mount Evans, is by no means the highest place in the state.
Colorado has fifty three mountains over 14,000 feet with Mount Evans
ranked number 21. But this local cloud scraper, has a well-traveled
road to its top-a distinction shared by only one other Colorado peak,
the 14,110 foot Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs. Another fourteener,
west of Ft. Collins is Longs Peak.
CLIMATE
Colorado
weather changes often because it is subject to the weather fronts
from both the northwest and southwest. Temperatures, breezes and precipitation
all can vary in a short period of time. The sun may be shining downtown
while it's thundering across town in Aurora. The west side can have
an inch of rain while Denver International Airport is receiving one
tenth that amount. The standing joke among locals is that if you are
not happy with the weather, just wait fifteen minutes and it will
change.
Fall is characterized by chilly nights and warm afternoons. The first
snowfall usually comes in late September or early October, but you
will still be able to play golf into December. Temperatures will begin
to drop into the 30's and 40's at night, but daytime temperatures
will range from 50-70 degrees.
Typical winter weather begins after Christmas. Winters are generally
rather mild. Denver does not have tremendous harsh temperatures, and
cold waves generally only last a few days. There will be an occasional
snow storm and temperatures will range from 10-20 degrees at night
to 30-50 degrees during the day. "Chinook" winds will occasionally
drive the temperatures into the 70's.
March starts "Springtime in the Rockies." Surprisingly,
this is when most of the heaviest snows come; it is very wet and lasts
only a day or so. Temperatures will range from 30-40 degrees at night
and 50-60 degrees during the day. May 15th is generally regarded as
the last freeze date for metro Denver.
In the summer, the weather pattern starts out in the morning with
light sunshine, then becomes cloudy in the late afternoon resulting
in scattered thunderstorms. By August, the showers taper off. Temperatures
from June through August will range from 75-95 degrees during the
day and 50-60 degrees at night. Daytime temperatures over 100 degrees
are very rare.
